About Me: My Story

There was never a dull moment growing up with four younger sisters and no brothers. When I wanted a break from all the commotion, I would retreat to my room with a book (or several): Nancy Drew, Little House on the Prairie, Harry Potter...these books sparked a love for reading that has carried me to a career teaching high school English.

Although I enjoy traveling, there is no place I would rather call home than Michigan. I grew up in East Jordan, Michigan--a small town in the northern lower peninsula. After attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan, I now live and teach in Pellston, Michigan--an even smaller town even farther north, almost as far as you can go before you reach the Mackinac Bridge. Yes, winters are long, cold, and snowy, but they make us stronger and help us appreciate the other seasons even more.

My hobbies include reading, running, and spending time with friends and family. Living and teaching in such a quiet area has its challenges, but I enjoy finding creative ways to introduce my daughters and students to ideas, cultures, and ways of life far different from their own.

My husband and I are both teachers, so a one-room schoolhouse was the perfect place to get married.

In 2015, we adopted a mixed-breed puppy we named Callie. Her most unique feature is that one ear goes up and the other goes down!

We are now a family of four, with two daughters who keep us on our toes every day.

Running has been a huge part of my life since I began running cross country in seventh grade. I still run when I can and enjoy sharing my love for the sport by coaching cross country and track and field.

My sisters and I all attended different colleges in Michigan with very diverse majors: English, nursing, business, social work, and chemistry. It is rare these days to get all of us together, so we always have to get a picture when it happens!

My husband's family is from a Greek island, so we chose to spend our honeymoon exploring Greece. I would love to go back to visit this amazing country with such spectacular people, history, scenery, and food.
